Polar Distribution of Intramitochondrial Granules of Mucosal Epithelial Cells

چکیده
Evidence obtained from both biochemical and morphological studies indicates that mitochondria play major roles in maintaining intraccllular ionic stability. In the case of whole cells, as well as for isolated mitochondria, an increase in size a n d / o r number of intramitochondrial granules is associated with the stabilizing process during changes in the ionic environment. The increase in large granules within the mitochondrial matrix has been shown to be an indication of divalent cation accumulat ion (Peachey, 1954). In our own studies of mucosal tissue of the small intestine of the rat, we have noted that during high rates of oxygen consumption by jejunal slices incubated in a mixture of amino acids (Bronk and Parsons, 1966) the mitochondria of the epithelial cells frequently show an apparent increase in the size and number of intramitochondrial granules. Al though most mitochondria in any sample of tissue incubated under these conditions are highly condensed, those which have an orthodox configuration also contain larger or more numerous mitochondrial matrical granules. In the instances being described, mitochondria are widely distributed throughout the cytoplasmic regions, but those organelles exhibiting this phenomenon are primarily localized in the basal region of the cell This paper describes this apparent structural polarity in brief form.

Electron microscopic studies of various cells in the alveolar wall of mice with special reference to spheroid alveolar epithelial cells after intravenous injection of squid-ink (sepia-melanin) solution.
The effect of an intravenous injection of squid-ink (sepia-melanin) solution on adult mouse spheroid alveolar epithelial cells was observed by the electron microscope. Sepia-melanin particles were seen in all alveolar wall cells examined that seems to suggest the entrance of sepia-melanin particles into the spheroid alveolar epithlial cells from the alveolar blood capillary. In cases of large p...

Background: Azo is a synthetic dye used in batik industries. It can be toxic to the tissue when exposed via inhalation, swallowing, or direct contact. Expression of cytokeratin will change in hyperplastic and cancer of the oral mucosa. Expression of Cytokeratin 8, 18, 19 is strong in the epithelial cells that undergo excessive hyperproliferation and oral mucosal changes in le...
متن کاملElectron Microscopic Observations on the Accumulation of Divalent Cations in Intramitochondrial Granules
Electron microscopic evidence is presented, from mitochondria in whole cells of toad urinary bladder and from isolated rat kidney mitochondria, indicating that the divalent cations calcium, strontium, and barium are accumulated in granules localized in the mitochondrial matrix. This accumulation occurs under conditions in which divalent ions are present in the medium bathing either whole cells ...
متن کاملPeptide fragments of AMP-18, a novel secreted gastric antrum mucosal protein, are mitogenic and motogenic.
Antrum mucosal protein (AMP)-18 is a novel 18-kDa protein synthesized by cells of the gastric antrum mucosa. The protein is present in secretion granules of murine gastric antrum epithelial cells and is a component of canine antrum mucus, suggesting that it is secreted into the viscoelastic gel layer on the mucosal surface. Release of the protein appears to be regulated because forskolin decrea...
